What is Family Constellation?
Family Constellation is a systemic and phenomenological therapeutic approach developed by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger from the 1980s onward. Grounded in the principles of the "Orders of Love" — belonging, hierarchy, and balance between giving and receiving — the technique reveals hidden dynamics within family systems that may be influencing an individual's life in ways they are unaware of.
The central premise is that all members of a family system are connected by invisible bonds of loyalty and belonging. When someone in the family is excluded, forgotten, or their fate is not acknowledged, other members may unconsciously repeat patterns, develop symptoms, or take on roles that don't belong to them — a phenomenon called "systemic entanglement."
Through representations — whether with people (in groups) or symbolic objects (in individual sessions) — the constellation facilitator reveals these hidden dynamics, allowing the client to see, understand, and resolve transgenerational patterns that may be causing suffering, emotional blocks, relationship difficulties, recurring health problems, or professional and financial obstacles.
Family Constellation is one of the fastest-growing integrative practices in Brazil today, applied in clinical, educational, organizational, and even judicial contexts, where it is used as a conflict resolution tool in family courts.
How does Family Constellation work?
The Family Constellation process can take place in group or individual format. In the group format — the most traditional — the client presents their issue to the facilitator, who then selects participants to represent family system members. These representatives are positioned in space and, remarkably, begin to experience sensations, emotions, and impulses that reflect the dynamics of the real system — a phenomenon known as "representative perception" or the "morphogenetic field."
In individual format, the facilitator uses dolls, floor anchors, cushions, or other objects to represent system members. The dynamic is guided by the phenomenological perception of both the facilitator and the client.
The facilitator observes the movements, expressions, and positions of the representatives, identifying entanglements, exclusions, and imbalances. Through "healing sentences" — phrases that acknowledge fates, restore hierarchies, and return belongings — and repositioning, the family system is reorganized toward a "loving order" that frees the client from the patterns that held them.
Benefits of Family Constellation
Who is Family Constellation for?
Family Constellation is recommended for anyone who wishes to understand and transform patterns that repeat in their life — whether in relationships, health, finances, or professional career. It is especially sought by people facing recurring difficulties that cannot be explained or resolved through conventional approaches.
The technique is applied to adults and can be adapted for adolescents with parental supervision. Constellation groups are open to everyone, even those who participate only as representatives, as the experience of representing can also bring therapeutic benefits to the participant.
Common indications
- Family conflicts and broken bonds
- Recurring difficulties in romantic relationships
- Repetitive patterns of financial or professional failure
- Unresolved grief and unprocessed losses
- Illnesses or symptoms without clear diagnosis
- Difficulties with bonding and belonging
- Separations and child custody issues
- Transgenerational pattern repetition (alcoholism, violence, etc.)
What to expect in a Family Constellation session
In a group session, the process typically lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour for each constellation. The complete workshop may last an entire day, with several participants constellating their issues. The client briefly shares their issue (without needing to tell their entire story), and the facilitator selects representatives from the group.
In individual sessions, the appointment lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. The facilitator uses dolls, anchors, or other resources to set up the constellation field. The process is more intimate and allows for deep exploration of the issue brought forward.
After the constellation, it's common to experience a range of emotions: relief, fatigue, deep reflection, or even resistance. It's recommended not to over-analyze what happened and to allow the process to integrate naturally over the following days and weeks. Many therapists advise that the effects of a constellation can unfold for weeks or months after the session.
Official recognition in Brazil
Family Constellation was officially included in Brazil's National Policy for Integrative and Complementary Practices (PNPICS) by Ministry Ordinance No. 849 of March 27, 2017. This inclusion was an important milestone for legitimizing the practice in Brazil and opened doors for its offering in primary healthcare units, hospitals, and reference centers across the country.
In the legal sphere, Family Constellation has been used by courts of justice in several Brazilian states as a mediation and conflict resolution tool. The National Council of Justice (CNJ) has recognized the technique's effectiveness in family law cases, and its use has expanded in family courts, small claims courts, and mediation centers.

Frequently asked questions about Family Constellation
Do I need to tell my entire family history in the session?
No. In Family Constellation, the facilitator works with minimal information. You only need to present the issue or theme you wish to work on. Too much information can actually interfere with the phenomenological process.
Does Constellation solve the problem in a single session?
Each constellation is a complete process in itself. Many people report significant changes after a single session. However, depending on the complexity of the family system and the issue brought, additional sessions may be beneficial to work on different aspects.
Does my whole family need to participate?
No. Family Constellation works with representations, not with the physical presence of family members. The work is done with the client and, in group sessions, with volunteers acting as representatives. Changes in the systemic field can benefit the entire family system, even without other members being present.
What's the difference between Family Constellation and conventional family therapy?
Conventional family therapy usually works with family members present, focusing on communication and current conflict resolution. Family Constellation works with the transgenerational systemic field — accessing dynamics from previous generations — and uses representations to reveal hidden patterns influencing the present.
Does Family Constellation work online?
Yes. The online modality has expanded significantly, especially since 2020. Using dolls, visual anchors, or even remote representatives, the facilitator can guide the process remotely. Many therapists report results as effective as in-person sessions.
