What is Access Bars?

Access Bars® is an integrative therapy technique created by Gary Douglas in 1990 as part of the Access Consciousness® system. The technique involves gently touching 32 specific points on the head, known as "Bars." Each of these points stores the electromagnetic energy of all the thoughts, ideas, beliefs, emotions, attitudes, and decisions accumulated throughout life in different areas.

The 32 points are organized into categories corresponding to fundamental aspects of human existence: money, control, creativity, aging, sexuality, body, healing, forms and structure, awareness, joy, sadness, communication, time, space, and power, among others. When these points are gently touched, the electromagnetic charge holding limiting thought patterns is dissipated, allowing new possibilities to open up.

The practice has expanded to over 170 countries and is used by therapists, psychologists, physicians, dentists, nurses, and professionals from various healthcare fields as a complementary wellness tool. Many practitioners report that a single Access Bars session can have the equivalent effect of 20 years of meditation in terms of deep relaxation.

Originally developed as part of a broader set of consciousness tools, Access Bars has become the most popular entry point to Access Consciousness, attracting thousands of newly certified facilitators every year in Brazil and worldwide.

How does Access Bars work?

During a session, the facilitator gently touches pairs of points on the receiver's head. This touch activates an electromagnetic process that begins to release the energetic polarity — the positive and negative charge — that holds fixed thought patterns, beliefs, and points of view in place.

The process is comparable to deleting old files from a computer: when energy is released from the points, space is created for new thoughts, new choices, and new possibilities. Each pair of points is connected to specific neural networks, and the gentle touch facilitates a kind of "reset" of these networks.

Neuroscientist Dr. Jeffrey Fannin conducted studies using brain mapping (EEG) that demonstrated significant changes in brain wave activity during and after Access Bars sessions. Results showed a transition from beta waves (associated with stress and rapid thinking) to theta waves (associated with deep relaxation, meditation, and creativity).

The technique is especially sought by people dealing with chronic stress, anxiety, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, professional burnout, frequent headaches, mild depression, and by those who simply seek greater emotional and mental balance in their daily lives.

What to expect in a Access Bars session

A typical Access Bars session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. The receiver lies comfortably face-up on a massage table, wearing comfortable clothing. No special preparation is needed — just a willingness to receive.

The facilitator sits or stands beside the table and begins gently touching points on the head. The touch is light — no pressure or manipulation. Most people experience a profound sensation of relaxation, similar to the state between waking and sleeping. Some fall asleep during the session, which is completely normal and does not diminish the process's effectiveness.

After the session, reactions vary: many report a feeling of lightness and mental clarity, as if "a weight had been lifted." Some experience more energy, while others feel like resting. Drinking plenty of water and allowing a quiet moment after the session is recommended. Effects tend to deepen in the following days, and regular sessions enhance results.

Official recognition in Brazil

Access Bars is included in Brazil's National Policy for Integrative and Complementary Practices (PNPICS) under the Ministry of Health and can be offered within the public health system (SUS). In 2017, Ministry Ordinance No. 849 expanded the PNPICS to include various practices, among them body and energy techniques that encompass approaches like Access Bars.

This official recognition ensures that certified professionals can legally practice in Brazil, both in private offices and public health facilities. Access Bars training is accessible and can be completed in a one-day course, although many professionals pursue advanced certifications within the Access Consciousness system.

Frequently asked questions about Access Bars

How many sessions are needed to feel results?

Many people report benefits from the very first session, such as deep relaxation and improved sleep. However, regular sessions (weekly or biweekly) tend to enhance and deepen results over time. There is no fixed number — each person responds uniquely.

Does Access Bars replace medical or psychological treatment?

No. Access Bars is a complementary practice and does not replace medical, psychological, or psychiatric treatments. It can be used alongside other therapeutic approaches to enhance results.

Are there any contraindications?

There are no known contraindications. The technique is extremely gentle and can be applied to people of all ages, including children, the elderly, and pregnant women. It is one of the safest integrative practices available.

Do I need to believe in the technique for it to work?

No. Access Bars works regardless of beliefs or expectations. Many skeptics report significant results after the first session. The technique works at the body's electromagnetic level, requiring no faith or belief to be effective.

What's the difference between Access Bars and other energy techniques like Reiki?

While techniques like Reiki work with channeling universal energy, Access Bars specifically focuses on dissipating the electromagnetic charge stored in 32 points on the head. The goal is to release limiting thought patterns, not direct energy. Each approach has its value and they can be complementary.
